The modern iPhone is an incredible piece of technology. It is called the iPhone, but it could and perhaps should be called the iCamera. Most photographers own one, but few understand its full capabilities. During the four sessions of this online class, we will unlock the potential found in this camera. What goes on between your ears is more important than what is in your hands. And you (almost) always have your iPhone with you. This class will help you put the two together.

In the first class, we will examine what the iPhone does and does not do. Discussions will include lens options, HEIC vs. RAW vs. JPEG, how to capture a RAW image if your iPhone doesn’t do that natively, and the iPhone’s many shooting modes, such as Portrait Mode, Time Lapse, Live Mode, Pano Mode, and Low Light Mode. We will dive into the settings that allow you to configure the iPhone as a camera how you want to use it.

In the second class, we will dive into processing images with both the Apple suite of editing options as well as look at other mobile editing options that allow greater flexibility in editing.

In the third class, we will examine some of the more effective and valuable APPs for the iPhone, including Hipstamatic Tintype, Hipstamatic Classic, Even Longer ( an app for long exposures), Halide Mark II Pro Camera, the Moment camera and lens, and various tripod options (one is the size of a credit card).

The fourth class will cover using Lightroom (mobile) and Lightroom CC with your iPhone images. We will cover the basic editing options in both versions of Lightroom when to use which one, and how to edit your images for the best presentation for either printing or social media.

12 reasons the iPhone is a great camera:

  1. It is always with you.
  2. It is subtle; you can use it anywhere without others noticing you using it.
  3. Compared to a DSLR or mirrorless camera, it is not worth stealing. If stolen, you can find it or brick it.
  4. It has a bright screen which makes images easy to see in the daylight.
  5. It automatically backs up to the cloud.
  6. It is waterproof or at least impervious to the elements.
  7. The metadata will tell you exactly where you were and when you made any photographs.
  8. Images are easy to capture, edit, and post. No downloading or transferring of your files.
  9. Sharing files is simple: airdrop text or email.
  10. You can shoot RAW with most iPhones either natively or with an outside APP.
  11. If you already work in the Adobe world, your images can be downloaded directly into your Lightroom Library.
  12. You can make images that look like anything from a tintype to a modern color print.
