A Portrait of a Community: Lincolnville, Maine

July 22 – 27, 2018 Lincolnville, Maine Class Size: 15 Tuition: $1725 Register

The 2020 Bicentennial of the United Christian Church in Lincolnville Maine provides the perfect timing for this portrait of a community workshop! Through the connections of church and town members we will be invited into homes, farms, community organizations, businesses and buildings so that we can create a wide-ranging portrait of Lincolnville. We will photograph the town, the beaches, the parks and other physical features of the area as well. The final result of our work will be an exhibition the summer of 2019 in the church’s Community Hall in which all students are expected to participate.

As in most New England towns, a church had to be established for the town to be chartered. The Lincolnville church was built in 1820-21 and for many decades functioned as both a church and public meetinghouse for the town. In 1961 on land donated by the church a community building was added which served both town and church for various functions until 2009 when the church took full responsibility for it. Today’s renovated structure continues to serve for large community gatherings and receptions, a weekly Soup Café, AA meetings and art exhibits.

Students will be given daily assignments of people and places to photograph in Lincolnville. We will have a daily morning review of work before leaving for that day’s assignments. Afternoons and evenings will be work time. We will try to blend assignments with interests but hope you will be open to stretching and challenging your comfort zone by being open to new experiences!

The workshop begins Sunday, July 22nd at 6:30 pm with a “Meet & Greet” and ends with dinner on Friday, July 27th. Participants are responsible for lodging, meals and transportation.
