Canyons, Waterfalls & Spring in the Park
April 29 – MY 4, 2018 Letchworth State Park, NY Class Size: 10 Tuition: $1725 Register
This new location workshop is focused on Letchworth State Park in western New York. The readers of USA Today voted it the best State Park in the United States! Called the Grand Canyon of the East it is filled with trails, ponds, waterfalls and the canyon formed by the Genesee River on its northward journey. The western side of the gorge is a manicured landscape and maintains much of the feeling created by the work of the Civilian Conservation Corp of the 1930’s. It has 22 hiking trails ranging in length from 1/4 to 7+ miles on both sides of the gorge. The three largest waterfalls are accessible by short walks. The park runs north to south so the gorge should have wonderful light in both mornings and afternoons.
Also on our agenda for the workshop will be the Mount Morris Dam (the largest of its type east of the Mississippi) and Stony Brook State Park.
We will focus on creating photographs in this workshop. All camera formats, film and digital, are welcome. Large format and film are always welcome in my workshop but be advised that there is no opportunity for processing film. Digital photographers should bring their own laptop to edit for critiques.
Throughout the week we will take time out for a few critiques. I ask that you share 5 - 10 images per critique. These may be images made during the workshop or from previous work, in print or digital form. In addition, if you would like an individual portfolio review bring a representative portfolio of no more than 30 images, in print or digital format.
My Spirit of Structure workshops are designed to increase your skills, challenge old habits and help you break out of ruts. Your focus during the week is not so much about making the perfect photograph but in approaching subjects differently, in shifting your perspective, in taking risks. This combination of working in a new environment and altering how you approach your subject will change your photographs long after you leave the workshop.
Participants are responsible for lodging, meals and transportation. The workshop begins on Sunday, April 29th at 6 p.m. and ends with dinner on Friday, May 4th.
