Collectors Print Special: May 2010

Sentinel, Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California

Dear Friends,

This month I am presenting the second print in the 2010 Collectors Print Special series. The enthusiastic response to the February print was a welcome surprise. Thank you to everyone who invested in Round Tower, St. Magnus Kirk, Egilsay, Orkney, 2006! All of the prints in this year's series are original 5 x 7 platinum prints, offered at the discounted price of $225.00 (including shipping) for the month they are highlighted. Prints will remain available after the special at the regular retail price of $500.00. All prints will be signed, unmatted and delivered the month following your purchase.

The images have been selected from my own personal favorites. I find when editing for a book project, exhibit or portfolio that I always have more images I like than can be included in the final edit. The idea for making these "other" images available through a Collectors Print Special is not an original one. Edward Weston, John Sexton and Kim Weston are just a few of the outstanding photographers who have utilized this approach. I am hopeful that you will consider my own images a worthy addition to your photography collections.

The next print special will be available in August, and we will end the year with a November print. Remember that if you purchase all four images this year, you will receive a fifth image free! This surprise image will be shipped with your November print order.

Each print you buy in this collection gives you a savings of 55% off the regular print price of $500.00. This is a terrific opportunity for all photography print collectors to make a Tillman Crane photograph a part of your art collection!

This month's print, Sentinel, Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California, is a horizontal 5 x 7 platinum print from a negative made in 2001. I took a group of photography students from the Waterford School to work for a week in northern California. My belief was that by walking and photographing in the footsteps of Weston, Adams and the many superb artists that followed them, not only would their own work become stronger, but also how they looked at the work of others would be forever changed. Many surprises came from this week for all of us. The kids were great but by the end of the week their need for attention and my need to make a photograph of my own were at odds. In a fit of pique I sent them down the beach to run and play so that I could work in peace. I made a few images on the beach but nothing I felt strongly about. As I headed back up towards the parking lot I caught the shadows of the almost setting sun as it played across these trees. I quickly made three negatives – and the light was gone. I chose this image for the next in the series because of how the dark circle around the tree stump plays to the light in the Round Tower.
