The Treemont Portfolio
The area situated along the Middle Prong of Little River is known as Tremont. First settled around 1859 by William Marion Walker, logging was the biggest industry in the area and operations continued until 1938, four years after the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934. Tremont is now the location of the Great Smoky Mountains Institute.
I first started working with large format camera in the early 1980’s as a creative outlet different from my work as a newspaper photographer for the Daily Times of Maryville, TN. I gave myself the assignment that I would go to the Tremont area and work with my 8x10 at least one day a week. After a year, I had made about 25 trips to the area, producing a small portfolio of work. I continued shooting the project for the next several years, culminating in an exhibit at Maryville College in 1985.
Even though leaving Tennessee in 1987, I have returned to photograph in this area several times. This portfolio is selected from work made during the last thirty years. I look forward to bringing a workshop to the area in spring 2016.
