I grew up in Alabama. I remember going to the train station to send my grandmother on her annual trip to Florida for the winter. I remember the metal towers of the cotton warehouses filling the sky. I spent hours in the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge fishing and exploring. I returned to Alabama in 2011 to look at the possibility of leading a workshop near where I grew up. I spent a day at the Sloss Furnace in Birmingham. I remember when it was a working steel mill and now it’s a National Historic Site and living history Museum. It reminded me of the Chestnut Hill Pumping Stations where I worked extensively in the 1990’s.
This work is the early work I’ve begun on my photographic journey of return to the place I grew up. I am returning this January to continue my personal work and to introduce a group of photographers to my hometown and Alabama through the Alabama Revisited workshop.
